I was pleased to support the Limitation Amendment (Child Abuse) Bill 2016.
The passing of this Act gives victims of Child Abuse and Child Sexual Abuse an opportunity to seek justice without the restriction of a time limit.
This bill aims to acknowledge the abuse suffered by many children and young people. It allows victims who suffered child abuse decades ago to seek civil damages from those responsible for the abuse, including an organisation.
Child abuse victims face multiple barriers to pursuing a civil litigation process. Addressing the limitation period and broadening the abuses covered is a significant first step towards better outcomes for victims.
The bill allows victim’s access to claims at whatever point they feel ready to claim.
